Jan 31, 2011 - I'm Back!!!

I'm done with my big coloring project and ready to get back to it! :-D

I know.. it's been a long time since I posted any of my own drawings. We can pretty much agree that the sketch a day resolution of mine is broken hehe. But I think I'll continue with the spirit of the endeavor which is to draw as much as I can and to try things I've never done before in order to become a better artist. Hell all the sketching I've done this month (minus the 2 weeks I was coloring sequential pages night and day) is more than I remember doing last year. Hence the resolution.

With this piece I wanted to try drawing someone at a downward angle which of course meant dealing with foreshortening. I really need to spend more time practicing foreshortening. The piece looks good, but I feel like it could be better.

The character's name is Gospel and she is a member of Drumfish Production's hero group: Sentinels

As you can see, I put a lot more time into the details because a) I had the time to do that today and b) I really want to color it. I don't know when I'll be able to color it but man am I looking forward to that hehe.

Jan 10-19, 2011 - /sigh

Well it has been over a week since I sketched. While I have been really good about sticking to my diet (I lost 9 lbs so far) I have been terrible about trying to keep my resolution to sketch everyday.

I have several projects on my plate right now. Nathan suggested I post something... even if its my color work rather than my sketching. A lot of what I have been working on I cannot post, but I do have a few commissions I can post just to show that I have been doing something. :)

The book I am working on right now promises to keep be busy until the end of the month. My hope is that once I am done with it my time will free up and I will be able to make up for all the lost sketching. Until then, here are a few of my recent color works.

Jan 9, 2011 - The Feet

Today I managed to catch up on a lot of things. It also snowed for like 30 minutes this morning! Sorry, I live in Texas so snow here is always something to be excited about. :)

After finishing up my work I did a study on the feet. I am not used to drawing feet at all... hell even when I draw shoes or boots they pretty much just end up looking like blocks. So I took my time and I think I managed to do a decent job.

Jan 6-7, 2011 - It Happened...

I didn't sketch these two days. :(

I was so busy not only with my coloring work, but also with family stuff that I just completely spaced my sketching. Friday my cousins Ashley and Brandy stayed the night with us and by the time we were all tired I just couldn't find the energy to do anything but crash.

Jan 8, 2011 - Day of the Dresses

One of the reasons my cousins stayed the night with us was the fact that Brandy had an appointment Saturday at David's Bridal for her bridesmaids dress fittings. We spend almost 2 hours changing in and out of gowns. Luckily as the Matron of Honor Brandy was kind enough to allow me to pick out a longer dress than the rest of the bridesmaids. Not that I am a prude or anything... I just hate the way my legs look.

When we finally parted ways Nathan was kind enough to make me dinner, so although I was tired I did find a little time to sketch out a quick study of the leg muscles.

Jan 5, 2011 - Torso Front and Back

For the past couple days I have been incredibly busy. To be honest, I'll be busy well into next week. So be prepared for a lot of simple studies hehe. Today I sketched the male chest and back. I think I still need to work on my proportions a bit, so expect to see plenty of sketches of the male form.

Hopefully this weekend I will be able to take more than 10-15 minutes to sketch. :D

Jan 4, 2011

Busy day again, and I wanted to continue my study of the arm and hands. The work I'm coloring contains a lot of male characters, I was really inspired to make some relatively realistic musculature in the arms, and make a really expressive clenched fist.

I forget how square male forms can be, and I'm liking practicing making it look right.

Jan 3, 2011 - Quick Arm

Today I was only able to do a quick study of the arm. I've got a few coloring projects on my plate including a rush one due tomorrow, but I wanted to get something sketched out. I'll come back to the arm and do a more comprehensive study when my schedule frees up a bit.

Alright, back to work. :)

Jan 2, 2011 - Back to Basics

Before getting to work packing up all the Christmas decorations, I decided to do another quick sketch. I was trying to draw a male figure, however he was turning out a little... ambiguous. After some discussion with Nathan I realized my issue may be that I have a hard time figuring out muscle placement. So I decided to take it back to the building blocks. I dug out my college books and found my anatomy and physiology textbook and just started flipping through the pages.

I have a year to sketch and doodle so I am not worried about starting out slow... especially if it helps me in the long run. So here is my first muscle study: the neck.

Jan. 1, 2011 - Happy New Year All!!!

My name is Danielle Alexis and right now I work as a freelance comic colorist. Coloring is my passion. I love bringing lineart and sequential pages to life through color and feel very blessed for the opportunity to live my dream. However, because I spend a majority of my time coloring other people's pencils/inks I haven't had a lot of time to do my own sketching. So one of my New Year's resolutions for 2011 is to do a sketch a day. It may not be much, maybe even just a doodle... but my objective is to find as little as 10 minutes to practice and hopefully grow into a well rounded artist. :)

So here we go: Being New Year's Day I spent most of the day out at my brother-in-law's place eating ribs, drinking beer and playing video games. When Nathan and I got home I took about 15 minutes to sketch and came up with my first sketch of the new year. I usually draw my pin ups standing upright looking flirty. This time I wanted to try something with a little more awkward.

Sorry for the bad scan. It's not very detailed, but I feel like it is a good starting place. I plan on practicing my ability to draw anatomy/poses and then moving on to drawing animals, clothing, nature, architecture, etc. My goal is to by the end of this year be able to draw full scenes: characters in their environments illustrating a story.

Wish me luck. :)
